New York CNN —A congressional committee investigating campus antisemitism took the unprecedented step of issuing multiple subpoenas to Harvard University on Friday, compelling the Ivy League school to turn over documents lawmakers are seeking. Three different Harvard officials are being subpoenaed: Alan Garber, Harvard’s interim president; Penny Pritzker, the billionaire leader of the Harvard Corporation, the governing board of the school; and N.P. The subpoenas order the Harvard officials to produce a series of documents by 5 pm ET on March 4. That list included meeting minutes since Hamas’ October 7 terror attacks on Israel and communications by university officials related to antisemitism. “Given the breadth and extensive nature of the information Harvard has provided to the Committee, it is unfortunate that the Committee has chosen to issue subpoenas,” Swain said.

New York CNN —Former Merck CEO Ken Frazier and KKR co-CEO Joseph Bae are joining Harvard University’s top board as the Ivy League school seeks to turn the page on a tumultuous period. Harvard announced the changes on Sunday evening, saying Frazier will start Wednesday to fill the open seat on the Harvard Corporation, the powerful yet secretive board under fire its handling of the recent controversies. Frazier, who graduated Harvard Law School in 1978, served as CEO of Merck and sat on the board of ExxonMobil, is widely respected in the business community. In 2017, Frazier quit former President Donald Trump’s manufacturing council in response to Trump’s initial failure to condemn white supremacists. Bae graduated from Harvard in 1994 and today he’s one of the most powerful private equity executives in the world.

CNN —Elon Musk, who spends much of his time on futuristic endeavors, took a step into history on Monday. Like in other entities where an upsurge in antisemitic activity started making headlines, Musk was taking performative action at Auschwitz. It was an effort to appear to be taking action while doing nothing. After his visit to the death camp, Musk appeared at a conference on antisemitism in nearby Krakow, Poland. President Claudine Gay was asked in Congress if calls for genocide against Jews violate Harvard rules against bullying and harassment.

New York CNN —Famed economist Larry Summers slammed Harvard’s top leaders on Sunday over concerns about how the Ivy League school is fighting antisemitism. Summers, a former president of Harvard, strongly criticized the selection of Harvard professor Derek Penslar as the co-chair of a newly-formed presidential task force on antisemitism. “I have lost confidence in the determination and ability of the Harvard Corporation and Harvard leadership to maintain Harvard as a place where Jews and Israelis can flourish,” Summers said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. The task forces will be charged with examining bias, determining root causes and compiling recommendations to combat hate. “As things currently stand, I am unable to reassure Harvard community members, those we are recruiting or prospective students that Harvard is making progress in countering anti-Semitism,” Summers said.

Gay, who last year became the first Black president in Harvard's nearly 400-year history, had retained the support of the powerful Harvard Corporation after her widely-criticized congressional testimony. Throughout the ordeal, she received a torrent of death threats, racist notes, and phone calls which only intensified as December progressed, according to The Times. Gay, who had only recently moved into the Harvard president's official residence, would pick up the phone only to be met with racial slurs, per the report. AdvertisementThe Times also reported that Gay's residence was being watched 24 hours a day. In her statement, Gay also called out not only critics of her prior work but also the personal racist attacks that had been lobbed at her.

"I think it is, if anything, too late," said Alex Bernat, a junior at the elite Massachusetts university, told The New York Times. AdvertisementAnother Harvard student, Ru'Quan Brown, told the Crimson that Gay's resignation "sets a bad precedent for future presidents." The professor added that he was "saddened for Harvard and higher education" with the news of Gay's resignation.

While the Harvard Corporation and faculty members backed Gay, the pressure continued. First and foremost, we thank President Gay for her deep and unwavering commitment to Harvard and to the pursuit of academic excellence. She believes passionately in Harvard's mission of education and research, and she cares profoundly about the people whose talents, ideas, and energy drive Harvard. An economist and a physician, he is a distinguished and wide-ranging scholar with appointments at Harvard Medical School, Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and the Harvard T.H. While President Gay has acknowledged missteps and has taken responsibility for them, it is also true that she has shown remarkable resilience in the face of deeply personal and sustained attacks.

A dam burst last week on the right, and a wave of grotesque antisemitism poured out all over the internet. Some of these people worked for the right wing’s biggest names, including Tucker Carlson, Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump. On Nov. 3, Owens posted on social media, “No government anywhere has a right to commit a genocide, ever. And maybe he loves Israel and he loves America too.” Owens, he said, “is a bit more America first. And finally, the term “America First,” popular with the New Right and the older, Lindbergh right, has always been misleading.

Between June 2018 and December 2021 there was a 25% tax imposed on the spirit, which decreased American whiskey exports by 18%. American whiskey exports to the EU jumped 118% in the first half of 2023 when compared to the same period in 2022. They went back and forth until 2021 when the tariffs on American whiskey were suspended and we took a great sigh of relief. The Biden administration’s leadership and efforts on this have enabled the suspension of tariffs on American whiskey and all distilled spirits products, but we are rightly anxious because a 50% tariff on American whiskey would be beyond devastating to exports. Since those tariffs have been suspended, we’ve seen American whiskey exports rebound to beyond pre-pandemic levels.

Organizers say it is the first Jewish alumni association in the history of the university. Harvard President Gay wrote a letter to members of the larger Harvard community addressing the tensions on Thursday. While a large chunk of university donations come from big gifts, small donations from alumni are becoming an increasingly important source of funding for higher education, according to the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Universities like to tout the high number of donations they receive to show that they have an engaged alumni base, said CASE. More than 300 Cooper Union alumni also recently threatened to end donations over the New York school’s response to anti-Israel protests.

New York CNN —A billboard truck drove near Harvard’s campus Wednesday displaying the names and photos of Harvard students whose organizations signed a statement blaming solely Israel for the deadly attacks by Hamas. Some students and their groups have since distanced themselves or withdrawn their endorsements from the statement amid an intense backlash inside and outside of Harvard. A conservative nonprofit said it organized the truck featuring the virtual billboards with students’ names and images under a banner that reads: “Harvard’s Leading Antisemites.” It also published names online. “We will continue to reject the PSC’s statement in the strongest terms — and demand accountability for those who signed it,” the statement added. In the wake of the mounting backlash, at least eight of the original 34 co-signing Harvard student groups had withdrawn their signature from the statement as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the Harvard Crimson student newspaper.

WASHINGTON, June 29 (Reuters) - Harvard University said on Thursday it will comply with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down its race-conscious student admissions programs in a way that will preserve its values on diversity and opportunity in higher education. "We will certainly comply with the Court’s decision," the prestigious university said in a statement. "In the weeks and months ahead, drawing on the talent and expertise of our Harvard community, we will determine how to preserve, consistent with the Court’s new precedent, our essential values." The Supreme Court ruling involving Harvard and the University of North Carolina was a sharp setback to affirmative action policies often used to increase the number of Black, Hispanic and other underrepresented minority groups on campuses. The 386-year-old Ivy League school's top administrators issued a letter to the Harvard community that was essentially a reprimand to the high court.
